I have been offering what is known as spiritual direction, spiritual companioning, or spiritual guidance since 2016, meeting with folks to listen and talk about their spiritual questions, struggles, and wonderings. I completed a spiritual direction internship with The Claret Center in Chicago, in 2019-2020, which helped me clarify and mature in my practice. I am in spiritual direction myself and am under regular supervision for my practice. I’m a member of Spiritual Directors International.
My most influential spiritual teachers these days are Julian of Norwich, Howard Thurman, Thomas Merton, Thich Nhat Hanh, Kathleen Norris, Jack Kornfield, and bell hooks.
These words from Julian of Norwich, a 14th century contemplative, capture my understanding of spiritual companioning: “I believe full surely that God’s spirit is in us all, giving light, wisdom, understanding, speaking words in us when we cannot speak, showing us gently what we would not see; what we are afraid to see; so that we may show pity, mercy, forgiveness to ourselves.”
I am available to meet with directees either by Zoom or in person here in Indianapolis, at First Congregational Church on the north side.
Contact me if you’d like more information or to see if I have availability for new directees.
